As the temperature rises it's important to take care of our dogs and make sure they stay safe and comfortable in the heat. Dogs can be susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration so it is crucial to implement some essential measures to ensure they keep happy and cool.
As a Dog behaviourist felt it was important to provide my clients with vital information to keep our dogs safe in the heat and enjoy the summer months to the fullest.
Provide ample, fresh water. Hydration is key! Make sure your dog has plenty of cool fresh water by providing several water bowls and refill regularly to prevent the water from becoming warm. You can add ice cubes too!
Create a shady retreat. Set up shady areas in your garden/yard with umbrellas. When your dog is indoors make sure they have access to cool, well-ventilated areas with good airflow. Shut the sun out and use fans where safe and appropriate
Limit activities in the hottest parts of the day and avoid walking your dog at this time. Taking your dog out in the early morning or evening when it is cooler will avoid the risk of heatstroke. Avoid high-energy activities such as ball throwing and take shorter, slower walks.
Invest in cooling accessories. Cooling vests, coats, bandannas, and mats will all help to keep your dog feeling cool
Frozen treats and toys. Keep your dog entertained with frozen lucky mats and Kongs, frozen treats and fruit will help entertain your dog whilst keeping them cool.
Regular grooming helps remove loose unwanted hair and promotes airflow around the skin. Do this in cooler parts of the day. Only use a qualified groomer to trim your dog as their coat can provide insulation against the heat.
Never leave your dog in a hot car. Even in moderately warm weather, the temperature in a car can skyrocket quickly causing deadly heatstroke. It's better to be safe than sorry. If it's warm out leave your dog at home.
Older dogs, puppies brachyactic breeds and tiny breeds are more vulnerable to heat stroke so please be aware and talk to your vet for extra advice.
Keeping your dog cool and happy is all about adjusting to their needs to ensure their wellbeing and avoid heat related issues. Stay cool and safe and enjoy the summer together ! ☺️
